Darr Calls Proposed Park Fee Increase "Vacation Tax"

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 Rogers, AR: The Parks, Recreation, and Travel Commission has proposed a 10-percent camping and lodging fee increase at state parks across Arkansas because they say fewer people are using the parks.
Mark Darr, Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor said Wednesday, "As a small business owner, I know that the way to attract more customers is not by raising prices. Increasing costs will not incentivize people to use park facilities more often. In this economy, families are already looking at ways they can cut costs and take more affordable vacations. This won't help."
Darr added, "Our state parks and recreation areas are an asset, but, in tough economic times, families and businesses often have to learn to live with less. I think government should learn to do so as well."
The Commission has said it will hear public comments on this issue before the next scheduled vote. "Citizens who object to this vacation tax should communicate their objections to the Commission," Darr suggested.
Public comments regarding the Parks, Recreation and Travel Commission's proposal may be sent via e-mail to kris.richardson@arkansas.gov or mailed to One Capitol Mall, Little Rock, AR 72201. The Commission's next meeting, where they will vote on the proposal, is scheduled for 2 p.m. on August 19 in the Eagle Room at DeGray Lake Resort State Park.
